I study the impact of sociotechnical systems, including novel AI-powered experiences, on people with disabilities. My research findings inform inclusive and ethically-designed processes and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>As of September,<\/p>\n<p>2022 I&#8217;m a Senior Research Scientist in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.google\/teams\/responsible-ai\/\">Google Research&#8217;s Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology organization.<\/a>\u00a0Previously, I was a postdoctoral researcher in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcii.cmu.edu\/\">Carnegie Mellon University\u2019s Human-Computer Interaction Institute<\/a>\u00a0and a researcher at Apple, Inc. I received my Ph.D. from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcde.washington.edu\/\">University of Washington\u2019s Human Centered Design and Engineering Department\u00a0<\/a>and I interned at Microsoft Research. I received my BA in Psychology with minors in African American Studies and Women\u2019s Studies from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uncw.edu\/\">University of North Carolina Wilmington.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have received funding from a Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Eight of my co-authored papers at the ACM\u2019s ASSETS, CHI, and DIS conferences have received awards.<\/p>\n<p>I update this website minimally. Read my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bennettc.com\/about-me-public-scholarship\/\">About page<\/a>\u00a0for a few things that are not on my CV.<\/p>\n<h2>Current Research Focuses<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The intersection of AI, novel accessibility solutions, and bias. Recent outcomes include:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bennett_Keyes_what-is-the-point-of-fairness-disability-ai-and-the-complexity-of-justice.pdf\">position paper<\/a>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Whittaker_disability-bias-and-AI.pdf\">technical report<\/a>, and podcasts (e.g.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radicalai.org\/cynthia-bennett\">Radical AI\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thegoodrobotpodcast.buzzsprout.com\/1786427\/8850285-cynthia-bennett-on-ai-disability-and-accessibility\">The Good Robot<\/a>on AI, bias, and disability. They argue for cautious AI deployments and for more attention to potential disability bias in AI systems more generally, and attention to the ways AI-powered accessibility solutions may also be harmful. These topics remain under-discussed in popular AI-bias discourse.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bennett_Its-Complicated-Negotiating-Accessibility-and-MisRepresentation-in-image-Descriptions-of-Race-Gender-and-\">This publication<\/a>and this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/videos\/play\/wwdc2021\/10304\/#:~:text=Discover%20how%20you%20can%20deliver,the%20design%20and%20development%20process.\">WWDC talk (excerpt starting at 13:12)<\/a>\u00a0on bias and ethics concerns around ML generating descriptions of people in images. While they are intended to make photos accessible to blind people who cannot see them, ML-generated image descriptions may also perpetuate documented race, gender, and disability-based bias.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Micromobility-_camera-ready_0426.pdf\">This publication<\/a>on ethical concerns related to interactions among people with disabilities and semiautonomous delivery robots in public space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Cultivating accessible computing research labs and design studios which invite, celebrate, and incorporate disability culture. We created a workflow diagram and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Mack_Anticipate-and-Adjust-Cultivating-Access-in-Human-Centered-Methods_Supplementary-Materials.docx\">tips<\/a>\u00a0you can incorporate into your own practice, and hopefully, improve upon and share back.<\/li>\n<li>Bringing disability activism and perspectives into HCI research and professional design: Some papers concern what it\u2019s like to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Hofmann_Living-Disability-Theory.pdf\">\u2018Live Disability theory\u2019<\/a>as disabled women academics, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bennett_the-promise-of-empathy-design-disability-and-knowing-the-other.pdf\">critique of empathy\u2019s application to understand disability experience in human centered design<\/a>, disability design storytelling through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bennett_biographical-prototypes-reimagining-recognition-and-disability-in-design.pdf\">Biographical Prototypes<\/a>, and honoring Interdependence from disability activism as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bennett_interdependence-as-a-frame-for-assistive-technology-design-and-research.pdf\">generative for accessibility design and research<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Recent Events<\/h2>\n<p><strong>June<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>2022:\u00a0<\/strong>Congratulations to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frank.computer\/\">Frank Elavsky<\/a>\u00a0who presented his first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Gleason_Disability-and-the-COVID-19-Pandemic-Using-Twitter-to-Understand-Accessibility-during-Rapid-Societal-Transition.pdf\">lead-author paper<\/a>\u00a0as a Ph.D. student! He invited me to help write his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chartability.fizz.studio\/\">open source Chartability principles and heuristics for evaluating the accessibility of digital data experiences<\/a>\u00a0up for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurovis.org\/\">EuroVIS academic community.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>May 2022:\u00a0<\/strong>I presented a talk called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bennett_Stanford_Centering-People-in-Information-Translation_Final.pdf\">Centering People in Information Translation<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cesta.stanford.edu\/\">Stanford\u2019s Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis,<\/a>\u00a0and discussant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/english.stanford.edu\/people\/roanne-kantor\">Professor Roanne Kantor<\/a>\u00a0followed with a fantastic and provocative response. The talk overviewed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Bennett_Its-Complicated-Negotiating-Accessibility-and-MisRepresentation-in-image-Descriptions-of-Race-Gender-and-Disability-1.pdf\">my research on the politics of human and machine-written image descriptions of race, gender, and disability,<\/a>\u00a0and recent art and activist commentary and futuring on human-centered approaches to ever-automating information translation. Professor Kantor\u2019s response enriched my talk by bringing in connections to disability law, digital media history, and feminist theory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 2022:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kmack3.github.io\/\">Kelly Mack<\/a>\u00a0did an awesome job leading a team of 8 researchers and presenting our resulting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennettc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Mack_Anticipate-and-Adjust-Cultivating-Access-in-Human-Centered-Methods-1.pdf\">honorable mentioned CHI 2022 \u00a0paper!<\/a>\u00a0We interviewed researchers and community organizers to learn how they currently host accessible human-centered studies and events. TL\/DR accessibility is a research specialization but all research should be accessible.
